The latest web property unveiled by Google is called Searchmash (www.searchmash.com). It appears to be a playground where they can try out different ideas for the Google results display.
A picture is worth a thousand words!
In that vein, one of the key enhancements of the results display in Searchmash is a column on the right side of the page that displays image results for your query. This does not initially seem that exciting, but when I tried it for a couple of queries, the results were remarkable. The query term "Vertical Search" led me to this picture and the term SEO took me to this one. There is no doubt that displaying result images is a good idea - they make it a lot easier for a user to understand these abstract concepts.
More features
An improvement to the search results page is long overdue, as I observed in a previous article: Google Search Results: Five wishes for "Display 2.0". In addition to the image search, Google is testing several other results display concepts with this web site:
User reordering of results
There has already been a lot of speculation about this feature. This may be a feature designed to tap into the wisdom of crowds - if enough users tend to move a result higher in the list, then perhaps it deserves to be higher, and the Google search aglorithm can take that into account.
Richer menus for the results
Interestingly, I had speculated about this in my earlier Five wishes article (#2 on the list). A user who clicks on a "green url" in the Searchmash results page, gets a menu of links rather than a single destination. Right now, the drop down list is not very useful (allowing a choice of opening in the current window or a new one, for example), but in future, the links in this list could be context-sensitive, opening a new level of richness of search results.
"More results" link in the bottom bar
This replaces the usual list of page numbers. The significance of this change is not yet clear to me.
When and how will these features get folded back into the main search engine web site? Google is not saying. But with this new playground, Google has the opportunity to "test drive" key new display improvements and features, tweaking them to make them more understandable and easier to use, and then integrate the most popular ones back into the main web site. Great going, Google!
